Haze reaches the “very high” band in western Singapore for the first time this season, and N95 masks go out early
The one-hour PM2.5 reading in the west rose from 195 at 1pm, in the high band, to 284 at 2pm on Wednesday 14 October, entering the very high band for the first time this season (CNA). A later CNA report gave the 2pm reading as 288 and said the level was the highest hourly reading since 2015. At 2pm the south read 159, the east 195 and the central region 206 (CNA). AsiaOne said the 24-hour PSI in the west reached 203, western Singapore’s first entry into the very unhealthy range in 2026. Community clubs began distributing N95 masks early to Pioneer and Merdeka Generation members, pregnant women, children aged seven to 16 and people with medical conditions, one pair each on showing an NRIC (CNA, Business Times, MS News). Haze shelters are to open, outdoor non-air-conditioned facilities in three regions were temporarily shut, and schools were told to adjust activities to the hourly reading (Straits Times, CNA, AsiaOne). Indonesia named more than 200 people and nine firms as suspects and hopes to put the fires out within a month (CNA). Grace Fu said Singapore is collecting and reviewing data and keeping its options open on prosecution, with no update yet from Indonesia (Business Times, CNA, Straits Times).
Fine particles are the part of haze that harms health. The jump from 195 to 284 in a single hour shows how fast conditions can change, so advice built on a daily average can lag behind what people are breathing. The diplomatic side matters because Singapore cannot put out fires in Indonesia. It can offer help, press its neighbours or pursue companies, and each route depends on evidence and on Jakarta’s response.
Check the hourly PM2.5 on the NEA website or the myENV app before outdoor plans, and keep strenuous exercise indoors when the reading is high or very high. Children, older people, pregnant women and anyone with asthma or heart or lung conditions should take most care. If you qualify for a free N95 mask, bring your NRIC to a community club. If you travel to Malaysia, check school, flight and air-quality notices first.
Acting on the hourly reading lets officials respond as the air changes: masks went out early, facilities were closed and schools were told to adjust activities. Keeping options open on prosecution leaves room for legal action once the evidence is gathered (Business Times, CNA).
Some readers have questioned the PSI 300 threshold for closing schools (planb.sg), and Workers’ Party MP Kenneth Tiong has called for air-conditioned classrooms (Independent Singapore). Critics say rules written around the daily PSI can lag behind spikes like Wednesday’s. Both views come from single outlets.
Watch NEA’s hourly figures today, not the headline. If the west stays above 250 into the morning, expect more closures and a harder debate about school thresholds. If it falls back, the next test is the 24-hour PSI. On prosecution, Ms Fu has left the door open but named no company. The useful signs are whether Indonesia answers Singapore’s offer and whether its list of more than 200 suspects includes firms with Singapore links.
