SGH neurosurgery head is under probe for not reporting a patient’s death to the coroner
The head of neurosurgery at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is under investigation for failing to report a patient’s death to the coroner, the Straits Times and CNA reported. The Straits Times said he operated on the woman before she died in January 2024 and that police were alerted a year later. CNA quoted him as saying he mistakenly believed he had discretion over whether to report the case, and that he wanted to show compassion to the family. DailyDrop has not seen the outcome of the investigation.
Reports to the coroner let an independent official decide whether a death needs inquiry. The case tests how hospitals decide which deaths must be reported.
Nothing changes for patients today. If a family member dies after a procedure and you have questions, hospitals can explain what must be reported.
The doctor says he wanted to show compassion to the family and wrongly thought he had discretion over reporting (CNA).
By his own account the belief was mistaken, and police were alerted only a year after the death (Straits Times).
Wait for the investigation. The follow-up to watch is whether SGH or the Ministry of Health changes its reporting guidance.
