Three mayors in Mersin, including Vahap Seçer, arrested; prosecutors allege about 331 million lira in public loss

59 people were detained in the operation on October 1. The opposition calls the investigation political; the charges have not yet been tested in court.

In the corruption investigation led by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Mersin Metropolitan Mayor Vahap Seçer, Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer were arrested by a criminal judgeship of peace (Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, A Haber, Yeni Ankara). The operation was carried out simultaneously on three municipalities on October 1, and 59 people were detained. The prosecutor’s office requested arrest for 50 people and judicial control for 10 (dokuz8Haber); the numbers in the sources reflect different stages of the investigation.

According to reports, nine suspects from Mezitli Municipality were arrested together with Tuncer, six people were placed under house arrest and one was released under judicial control. According to the prosecutor’s allegation, a public loss of about 331 million lira arose in 13 tenders and 63 direct procurement purchases at Mersin Metropolitan Municipality. The investigation rests on searches carried out at the municipality on March 11, 2026.

New Party Chairman Özgür Özel argues that the operations are political and says the mayors were put in prison without an indictment (Ege Telgraf, Aydınlık). The prosecutor’s allegations and the arrests are not yet a court ruling; whether the defendants are guilty will become clear at trial. There is no indictment in the sources DailyDrop has seen.

Bahçeli: Parliament should decide to renew the elections, Erdoğan should run once more; elections should be held in 2028

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, at the first group meeting of the new legislative year, asked the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) to take a “renewal of elections” decision so that President Erdoğan can run again in the next term, and proposed that elections be held within 2028 (Hürriyet, Cumhuriyet, Nefes, HaberGo, Anka Haber).

According to reports, because Erdoğan was re-elected in 2023, he cannot run a third time under the current provisions; 360 votes are needed for Parliament’s decision to renew elections, so a decision is hard to reach without opposition support. DailyDrop has not yet seen a reaction from the government or the opposition.

Karahan: Disinflation has lost momentum but continues; money leaving funds has moved to deposits

Central Bank (TCMB) Governor Fatih Karahan, in a presentation to the TBMM Planning and Budget Committee, said that disinflation has lost momentum because of geopolitical developments and energy prices, but is continuing (Foreks, CNBC-e, Gazete Oksijen, Yeni Şafak, Aksiyon). In the energy group, the annual price increase of 46.1 percent stayed about 11 points above last year’s. Karahan also noted that the sliding-scale system (eşel mobil) limited the effect of the global supply shock on domestic prices.

He said the slowdown is clearer in the items directly affected by monetary policy, but that the pass-through of supply-side shocks to headline inflation remained limited. On the fund crisis, he conveyed that the money leaving money market funds has largely moved to deposits and has not left the system. Karahan stressed that the tight stance will continue until price stability is achieved. Because the figures in the presentation text appear in the sources under different indicator names, DailyDrop used only the energy share.

Two separate narratives on Hormuz: Iran says the strait is closed, the US speaks of flow; Brent around $100

Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz will stay closed until US conditions are met (Al Jazeera, Fox News, October 4). On October 5, Iran International reported that Iran finds the talks with the US “meaningless” and that a third tanker was hit around the strait. The US Central Command (CENTCOM), for its part, called the closure claims “false” and said that commercial goods and energy shipments through the strait continue, with 20 million barrels of crude oil having passed (IranWire, Open Magazine); the two narratives contradict each other, and DailyDrop cannot independently verify which is correct.

On October 3, the G7 countries agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of oil and diesel reserves within four months; the release will be coordinated by the IEA, with diesel prioritized in the first 20 days (BirGün, Ekonomist, Haber7, Sabah). After the decision Brent briefly fell below $100, then returned to about $102; the sources give differing figures between 99.79 and 101.37. Which country will contribute how much of the reserves has not been settled.

“Public funds will be used for the fund payments.” According to reports, the bill states that no public funds will be used (Sabah, Haber7); the exact text of the bill will be known once it is submitted to Parliament.
“Hormuz has fully reopened and returned to normal.” CENTCOM says the flow continues, while Iran says the strait is closed; there is no independent verification (IranWire, Iran International).
