İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay joins the AK Party; Erdoğan pins on his badge

Tugay had been a CHP member since 2010. The New Party reacted sharply, and members of the İzmir State Theatre advisory board resigned en masse.

İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay joined the AK Party on Wednesday, October 7, at the party’s opening meeting of the legislative year; President Erdoğan pinned on his badge (Hürriyet, Medyascope, Memurlar.Net, Ekonomim). Tugay said “I understood that the best politics is service” and said he would rebuild İzmir with the support of the AK Party family. Erdoğan told him “welcome.”

According to reports, Tugay was a CHP member from 2010 to 2026 and was elected mayor in 2024; after leaving the party he had said he would remain independent. A day earlier, Özgür Özel had sharply criticized Tugay at the group meeting without naming him. The New Party’s first statement alleged that the AK Party had signed up İzmir’s mayor, and that while a district mayor was being detained, those who cross to the governing side are not investigated (Cumhuriyet).

Members of the İzmir State Theatre advisory board resigned en masse, saying they did not accept Tugay’s decision. In the sources DailyDrop has seen, there is no independent explanation of the reasons for Tugay’s move or its consequences for the municipality; the reactions are the parties’ own interpretations.

Cevdet Yılmaz briefs Parliament on the fund crisis: no Treasury money will be used, payments begin today at 17 funds

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz briefed the TBMM General Assembly on the fund crisis. He said the fundamentals of the economy are sound, that the funds in trouble do not represent the overall picture of the capital market and that there is no systemic risk. No Treasury resources will be used; payments will be made from the funds’ own resources and from amounts to be recovered from those who made excessive gains (Uzmanpara, Takvim, Gazete Kalem, Haber Ankara, Beyaz Gazete).

If the bill becomes law, principal payments of up to 1 million lira will be made within October. Yılmaz chairs the Fund Coordination Board, set up on September 29; 10 inspectors from the State Inspection Board are working in the field. Yılmaz said allegations about individuals should be shared with the public by name and, where available, with documents. Payments at 17 funds will begin on October 8 (Medyascope’s agenda summary). These are the government’s own statements; the distribution of responsibility will become clear after the inspectors’ reports.

Operations against the Çeşme and Esenyurt municipalities: 8 detained in Çeşme, 17 in Esenyurt

Istanbul Financial Crimes police detained 17 people in an operation on Esenyurt Municipality over allegations of bid rigging and taking bribes from contractors; prosecutors had issued detention orders for 19 suspects, and the remaining two are being sought. Those detained include Deputy Mayor Yusuf Ulutaş (Hürriyet, Gözlem Gazetesi, Haber Ekspres). Three are people appointed during the trustee period.

US wants a “meaningful” enrichment cut from Iran; the two sides remain far apart on Hormuz, Brent above $100

According to Al Jazeera’s report of October 7, US Vice President JD Vance wants Iran to make a “meaningful” cut in its uranium enrichment capacity; this may signal a softer stance than the earlier demand that enrichment be abandoned entirely. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, for his part, reiterated that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had said on October 4 that only talks based on justice and fairness could end the conflict.

The status of the Strait of Hormuz is disputed: Iran says it is closed, while CENTCOM says commercial shipping and energy shipments continue (Iran International, IranWire). Brent crude traded above $100 on Wednesday (TGRT Haber). The order of steps and the timetable are unclear; DailyDrop has seen no verified report of a new agreement.

Unverified — what we could not confirm

“The Treasury will cover fund investors.” Cevdet Yılmaz said no Treasury resources would be used and that payments would be made from the funds’ own resources and from the return of excessive gains (Uzmanpara, Haber Ankara).
“A US–Iran agreement on Hormuz has been reached.” Al Jazeera relays the new US demands; there is no report of an agreement. The sides describe the status of the strait differently.
“Tugay’s move was to escape the municipal investigations.” This is one side’s interpretation (the New Party’s statement); Tugay cites service as his reason. We saw no independent evidence.
