Kenya confirms its first Ebola case. The patient, back from Congo, died in Nairobi; 28 contacts are in isolation

Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case on Tuesday. The patient, a Kenyan citizen who had lived in Congo for about seven years, fell ill roughly a month before he traveled, was treated at several hospitals, went by road to Kampala and flew to Nairobi, arriving Saturday afternoon. He went to Nairobi Hospital, where he was isolated, tested positive and died late Monday. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said 28 contacts, including family members and health workers, have been identified and will be isolated for 21 days and released only after testing negative; 23 passengers from the same flight from Uganda are being traced. Border points are on high alert. Kenya had tested 267 samples at five laboratories since May; this was the first positive. It is the fourth country with a case linked to the epidemic in eastern Congo, the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record, with at least 8,400 cases and more than 4,000 deaths by government data, AP reported. Uganda had 20 cases and two deaths before WHO declared it free of the disease in August. The Africa CDC is sending a high-level team.

Nairobi's airport connects East Africa to Europe, the Gulf and Asia. A case that reached a major private hospital there by commercial flight is exactly the scenario public-health officials plan for. The 21-day clock on the contacts and the flight passengers now decides whether this stays a single case.

The risk to Americans is very low; Ebola spreads through contact with the body fluids of someone who is sick, not through the air. If you are traveling to East Africa, follow the CDC travel notices and expect health screening at airports.

Count to 21 from the patient's arrival. If no contact develops symptoms by late October, Kenya's response worked. Watch especially the health workers at Nairobi Hospital, who treated him before Ebola was confirmed.
