Student protests over a Cornell rape investigation spread to dozens of campuses

USA Today reported dozens of protests nationwide after rape accusations at Cornell. CBS said student protests over the handling of the investigation are intensifying, and its analysis found about 40 sexual assaults reported annually at Cornell from 2019 to 2024. The Ithaca city council asked the university to report such investigations to local police. ABC reported that the accuser's attorney says she faces threats; The Washington Post reported that lawyers for the accused want state Attorney General Letitia James removed as prosecutor. Allegations are unproven in court.

The case tests how universities handle assault reports and how far outside authorities can intervene.

If you have a student at a university, ask how reports are routed to police.

Watch for the university's formal response and any court ruling on the prosecutor question.
