Trump promises no attack on Iran before the midterms, as Tehran widens its Hormuz attacks

President Trump said the United States will not strike Iran before the November midterms, according to Politico, CBS, the Guardian and The Washington Post. He also said 'we protect our cities' after suggesting Iran could attack Los Angeles or San Diego. The same day The Washington Post reported that Iran is scaling up attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, and Reuters said tanker attack risks are rising as Tehran vows to block more routes and the U.S. imposed fresh sanctions on Iran's shadow fleet. The New York Times reported that the Pentagon has drawn up new strike plans while Trump hesitates. A Democratic senator told the Guardian that Hegseth is hiding the war's costs. Separately, Trump rallied for Ken Paxton in San Antonio on Wednesday; USA Today reported protesters interrupted him, and he called for a debate between Paxton and Democrat James Talarico, who has been off the trail with the flu.

A date-stamped promise not to attack turns military timing into campaign timing, and Tehran can read it as a window. At the same time oil is above $90, which is a midterm problem on its own.

If you buy gasoline, the Hormuz risk shows up at the pump no matter what the White House says. If you live in Texas, the Senate debate call is the new thing to watch.

Holding off until after the election lowers the risk of escalation while diplomacy runs, and the president keeps his options open.

Telling an adversary when you will not strike gives up leverage, and the war's costs are being kept from voters.

Take the promise as a statement of intent, not a guarantee. Watch Hormuz shipping incidents and any tanker losses over the weekend; they are what would test it.
