Isaias becomes a Category 2 hurricane. Landfall is forecast for Friday or Saturday, and Gulf oil is shutting in
CBS News reported that Isaias strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on Thursday as it moved toward the northern Gulf Coast, with landfall possible Friday or Saturday. ABC and Reuters also described a strengthening storm. The Guardian reported that millions of people are under warnings and that dangerous storm surge is forecast. NBC reported that producers are shutting in Gulf of Mexico oil output, which adds to gasoline-price worries on a day when crude already jumped. PBS looked at how El Niño is shaping the storm. We did not re-verify the exact extent of warnings against the National Hurricane Center's advisory, so check the latest one before acting.
Isaias lands in the middle of an oil-price scare. Shut-in platforms and refinery closures can lift fuel prices within days, even if the storm itself does little damage to the facilities.
On the Gulf Coast, Thursday night was the last easy window to fuel up and gather supplies; follow your county's evacuation orders. Elsewhere, expect gasoline futures to react, with pump prices lagging.
The Category 2 label matters less than the surge and the rain. Watch Friday's 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. advisories for any change in forecast landfall strength and for how many Gulf platforms stay shut.
