A Trump donor says Kimberly Guilfoyle asked him to pay a $100,000 bill. Vance and Rubio brush off questions

CBS, ABC, PBS and the Washington Post reported that a donor, identified by The Hill as Eric Deters, says Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, asked him to wire $100,000 to pay a credit card bill. CBS said he tied the request to access to Trump, and an associate called it a “quid pro quo.” PBS reported that House Democrats asked Guilfoyle for records related to the alleged scheme. Vance and Rubio brushed off questions on Thursday, the Washington Post and the Guardian reported, and Sen. Thom Tillis said she needs to answer a lot of questions, according to The Hill. Guilfoyle’s own response was not in the coverage we reviewed.

If true, the claim describes payment for access to power, which raises legal and ethics issues for a Senate-confirmed ambassador. It is also an easy story for Democrats before the midterms.

It is a test of how the administration handles allegations of paying for access when voters are watching costs and corruption.

Allegations are not findings. Watch for Guilfoyle’s response, whether she turns over records, and whether Republicans beyond Tillis ask questions.
