ICE shoots a man in the Bronx with a child in the car. Mamdani presses Trump to end enforcement in the city
An ICE officer shot and wounded a man in Marble Hill, in the Bronx, on Thursday afternoon, according to NBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian, CBS, ABC, Reuters and the BBC. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the man was in a car with a 5-year-old child when agents surrounded him and fired several rounds, and that the child appeared physically unharmed. DHS said officers were conducting a targeted operation to arrest a man with a prior criminal conviction, that an officer discharged a weapon, and that the man is alive at a local hospital. Politico and USA Today reported that Mamdani contacted Trump. Accounts of the call differ, and the coverage we reviewed shows no federal response to his demand that enforcement stop.
The shooting is the latest in a series involving immigration agents, and it lands in the city whose mayor has made confronting enforcement a signature issue. A child in the car raises the stakes for how the case is investigated and who investigates it.
For New Yorkers, the question is how and where federal enforcement operates near homes, schools and streets. The city has limited power over federal agents, so the outcome depends on federal agencies and the courts.
Officers make arrests in dangerous circumstances and DHS says it targeted a man with a prior conviction. The facts, including video, should decide.
Firing into a car with a child inside cannot be squared with safe enforcement. The city and an independent body deserve evidence and a full account.
Three things decide the story: whether video exists, what the officer says triggered the shots, and whether any independent inquiry opens. Until then, only the outlines are confirmed. DHS’s description of the man comes from DHS.
