Hurricane Isaias closes in on the Gulf Coast. Landfall is forecast for Friday or Saturday, and Gulf oil is shutting in
CBS News reported that Isaias strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on Thursday and could hit the Gulf Coast Friday or Saturday. NBC, ABC, PBS, Reuters, the New York Times and the Guardian described Gulf Coast communities preparing, with millions under warnings and dangerous storm surge in the forecast. NBC reported that producers are shutting in Gulf of Mexico oil output, and Bloomberg reported that 500,000 barrels a day of refining capacity is at risk. We did not re-check the warning areas against the National Hurricane Center text, so use its latest advisory.
The storm threatens people first. It also arrives with oil already above $90 and gasoline prices in focus, so shut-ins and refinery closures could lift fuel prices within days.
On the Gulf Coast, follow your county’s evacuation orders and the Hurricane Center’s advisories. Elsewhere, expect gasoline futures to react first and pump prices to follow.
Surge and rain, not the category number, cause most hurricane deaths. Watch Friday’s advisories for any change in landfall strength and how many platforms stay shut.
