Trump sets up a committee to investigate Fed governor Lisa Cook, with a White House hearing Nov. 5

President Trump created a committee to investigate allegations that Fed Governor Lisa Cook made false statements on mortgage documents, CBS, PBS, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Reuters, NBC and Politico reported. PBS said a written memo directs Cook to attend a White House hearing on Nov. 5 to answer the committee’s questions. The move follows a Supreme Court decision in June that rejected Trump’s attempt to fire her, CBS reported, and The Guardian called it a renewed effort to oust her. The Washington Post said the commission will report to the president. Cook’s response was not in the coverage we reviewed.

The Fed’s independence from presidential pressure is at issue, and the central bank sets rates at a moment of high yields and inflation worries.

If a president can remove a Fed governor over disputed allegations, rate decisions could become more political, which can affect mortgage and savings rates over time.

Mortgage fraud allegations deserve review, and a committee is a lawful way to gather facts.

The Supreme Court has already blocked the firing, and a presidential panel is a pretext to remove a governor.

Allegations are not findings. Watch whether Cook attends on Nov. 5, whether she answers, and whether the White House tries a second dismissal that goes back to court.
