NYPD releases video of the Bronx ICE shooting. DHS and the mayor disagree on what happened

CBS News reported that an ICE agent shot Oscar Belgal, 28, once in the neck in the Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, and that his child was in the back seat and was not struck. The NYPD released surveillance and body camera footage on Friday, CBS reported. The Washington Post said federal authorities allege Belgal used his car to ram government vehicles and endanger officers, and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said agents did not know the 5-year-old was in the car. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city wants ICE out, CBS reported, and Politico said the administration rejected his demand for an enforcement freeze. The Guardian reported residents were furious and frightened. The video and the officer’s account have not been reconciled in the coverage we saw.

The shooting is the latest in a series involving immigration agents, and it sits at the center of a fight between New York’s mayor and the federal government over enforcement in the city.

For New Yorkers, the question is how federal operations are carried out near homes and streets. The city has limited power over federal agents, so any inquiry depends on federal agencies and courts.

Officers face dangerous encounters, and the federal account says the man tried to ram agents with his car. Video and an investigation should decide.

Firing into a car with a child inside cannot be squared with safe enforcement, and an independent inquiry is needed.

Three things decide this: what the video shows about the car’s movement, what the officer says triggered the shots, and whether any independent investigation opens. The federal description comes from federal officials.
