Trump picks conservative commentator Katie Zacharia as his next press secretary
A White House official confirmed that Katie Zacharia was offered the job of press secretary, according to ABC, NBC, The Guardian, Politico, Reuters, USA Today, CBS and The Washington Post. She would succeed Karoline Leavitt, who left the post at the end of August after giving birth to her second child, The Guardian reported. The New York Times described Zacharia as a conservative commentator who briefly worked at the Department of Homeland Security. Descriptions of her recent media roles differ between outlets, so we leave them out. We did not see a formal announcement or a start date.
The press secretary is the president’s main voice to reporters. A new one arrives 24 days before the midterm elections.
Her briefings will shape what the White House says on prices, immigration and the war in the final weeks of the campaign.
Watch for confirmation of her acceptance, her first briefing, and any change to press access.
