Trump says Ukraine should “get a new president” after Zelensky condemns the diesel deal. A Russian bombing kills at least 12 in Zaporizhzhia
President Trump said Saturday that it is time for Ukraine to get a new president and that Volodymyr Zelensky wants to make problems for the world, according to The Washington Post and the BBC. Politico reported that he warned Zelensky to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries, and CBS News reported that Ukraine says it will not stop attacking Russian oil facilities. Zelensky wrote on Telegram that Russia thanked Washington for easing diesel export sanctions by dropping five guided bombs on homes in Zaporizhzhia; he reported 12 dead, three of them children, and 14 wounded. The Globe and Mail also reported at least 12 killed. The Hill reported that Republicans objected to the deal and that Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick expects a bipartisan bill to bar U.S. purchases of Russian oil. Reuters reported that Germany will keep its Russia sanctions and that a Kremlin aide called the Trump–Putin call very friendly.
The deal and Trump’s remarks split Washington from Kyiv and from European allies, and they put a fuel-price promise ahead of the sanctions policy the U.S. built after 2022.
Diesel moves freight and farm costs, so prices matter for groceries. Reuters has said earlier steps to raise supply have not yet lowered prices, and 300,000 tons is small against U.S. demand.
Fuel prices are hurting voters, and any added supply helps, the administration argues.
Buying from Russia funds the war, and telling a wartime ally to replace its leader is a pressure tactic that Republicans and allies reject.
Watch for a Treasury license, the first cargo, and whether Congress moves its bill. Until a shipment arrives, this is a presidential announcement.
