Stocks rose Friday; markets stay closed all weekend
U.S. stocks rose on Friday, Oct. 9. By DailyDrop’s market feed the S&P 500 gained 0.59% to 7,811.54, the Nasdaq rose 0.64% to 27,366.17 and the Dow added 0.83% to 51,654.95. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 1.3 basis points to 5.244%. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.39% to $91.85 a barrel and gold gained 1.43% to $4,216.30. Bloomberg Television’s closing-bell program said Wall Street rallied ahead of next week’s earnings, and another Bloomberg segment pointed to an ominous sign in the bond market’s latest selloff. Fox Business reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent responded to a letter from Sen. Elizabeth Warren asking about the rise in the 10-year yield. Reuters reported that Bessent will skip the IMF–World Bank meetings in Bangkok.
The 10-year yield sets borrowing costs for mortgages and companies, and oil feeds inflation. Stocks are rising while yields sit near multi-decade highs, which leaves the market leaning on earnings to justify prices.
High yields keep mortgage rates and credit-card costs elevated. Retirement accounts weighted toward technology carry the most exposure if earnings disappoint.
Earnings are expected to hold up, and the Friday rally shows buyers are still willing to pay.
Rising oil and yields are already a drag, and a rally that depends on a few large companies is fragile.
Markets are closed Saturday and Sunday. Monday, Oct. 12, is Columbus Day: stocks trade but the bond market is closed. The next hard tests are September CPI on Oct. 14, a heavy week of earnings and the Fed meeting on Oct. 28.
