Hurricane Simon makes landfall on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Rachel batters Southern California and Isaias moves north

Hurricane Simon hit Mexico’s Pacific coast on Sunday, PBS NewsHour reported. NPR had said it was approaching with 155 mph winds, and Reuters reported that President Claudia Sheinbaum urged coastal residents to stay indoors. In California, CBS News showed homes wrecked by Tropical Storm Rachel, with a resident saying “We’ve never seen anything like this,” and NPR reported that Rachel was downgraded as its winds and rain turned inland. The Las Vegas Review-Journal said Las Vegas was on the verge of an all-time rainfall record. The New York Times said Simon and Rachel bring flood risks to Mexico and the Southwest. PBS said Isaias moved north, and USA Today and DW put its death toll at four. We saw no confirmed casualty figures for Simon or Rachel.

Weakening storms still drop heavy rain on dry ground, and flash floods and mudslides are what hurt people after the winds ease.

In Southern California, Nevada and Mexico’s Pacific coast, follow local emergency orders and stay off flooded roads. Elsewhere, watch fuel prices if Gulf platforms stay shut.

Look for rainfall totals, rescues and damage counts over the next day. Ignore unsourced maps and videos.
