A man dies after a fall from the Goliath coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia

A rider fell to his death from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, outside Atlanta, on Monday afternoon, and several others were injured, police said, according to The New York Times, NBC News, CBS News, the AP, the Guardian and ABC News. CBS called Goliath a 200-foot-tall hypercoaster. NBC reported that passengers had to climb down a steep descent during the evacuation. It was not immediately clear what led to the fall, the Times said. A Six Flags spokesperson told ABC the company is cooperating fully with police. CNBC reported that Six Flags shares fell more than 10% in after-hours trading.

Fatal ride accidents are rare, but each prompts inspections and questions about restraints and procedures. The company faces a police investigation and a market reaction.

If you have plans at a Six Flags park, check the park’s ride status. Investigators have not said what happened, so avoid conclusions from social media videos.

Wait for the police and state inspectors to say what failed and whether the ride was working as designed. Until then, treat explanations as guesses.
