A federal judge extends the order keeping CNN, MS NOW and Politico in the White House, blocking Trump’s ban for now

A federal judge ruled late Tuesday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico keep their access to the White House while their lawsuit proceeds, extending an earlier order, Reuters, the Guardian, Politico, USA Today, NBC News and The New York Times reported. ABC News called it a preliminary injunction. The Hill said it blocks the White House from revoking the three outlets’ credentials. NPR’s headline said the outlets prevailed “for now,” and the Washington Post called it another blow to the White House media bans. The ruling comes after the Justice Department opened an antitrust inquiry into five networks that stopped sharing pool coverage of the president, the Times reported last week. We did not see the judge’s name, the written reasoning or any White House response.

Access to the White House press room shapes how the public learns what a president says and does. A court order restoring access says the government cannot freely choose which outlets cover it, at least until the case is decided. The dispute now has two fronts: the ban on three outlets and the antitrust inquiry into the networks that stopped sharing coverage.

Nothing changes for what you can read. It affects who is in the room when the president takes questions. If you rely on one of the three outlets, the order keeps its White House reporters in place for now.

A preliminary injunction is not the final word. Watch for an appeal, a request to pause the order and any change in the pool-coverage standoff. The written opinion will matter more than the headlines, because it will show how the judge weighed the government’s reasons for the ban.
