Justice Department gives California two days to review its voter rolls

The Justice Department demanded that California review its voter rolls within two days and threatened legal action, Politico reported. NBC News, PBS NewsHour, the Los Angeles Times, CBS News and Reuters reported that the department raised claims about noncitizens on the rolls; Reuters said it had seen the letter. FinancialJuice, citing the letter, said the department told the state to isolate ballots from suspected noncitizen voters. CBS said the department asked California to review whether noncitizens received mail ballots. We saw no evidence offered for the claim and no response from the state.

Noncitizens voting in federal elections is illegal, and the headlines we reviewed gave no count of how many such voters are alleged. A demand like this, weeks before an election, can start a legal fight over how ballots are counted.

If you are a registered California voter, nothing changes today. Check your registration through your state’s election office.

The department’s letter, Reuters reported, says noncitizens are on the rolls and threatens legal action if California does not act.

California has not answered in what we saw, so the state’s side is not yet on the record.

Watch what California says by the deadline and whether the department sues. The key missing piece is any number: how many voters are in question and on what evidence.
