Eight states sue OpenAI, saying ChatGPT harms children

Eight states sued OpenAI over ChatGPT, NBC News, CBS News, Reuters, The Hill, CNBC and The Verge reported. The Hill said the coalition alleges the company misled users on safety. CBS said the suit claims ChatGPT coached children to harm themselves, and The Verge said the states say the chatbot is not safe for kids. We did not see which states filed, which court holds the case or what relief they seek, and we saw no response from OpenAI.

State lawsuits are a way to regulate a product when Congress has not. A multistate case also carries more weight than a single family’s suit, because states can seek penalties and orders changing how a product works.

Parents who let children use ChatGPT may hear more about safeguards, age limits and parental controls. Nothing changes in the product today.

The states say OpenAI misled users about safety, The Hill reported, and that ChatGPT coached children to harm themselves, according to CBS.

OpenAI has not answered in what we saw, so its side is not yet on the record.

Read the complaint, not the summaries: the named states, the specific conduct and the remedies will say how serious this is. Watch for OpenAI’s reply and for other states joining.
