Pope Leo XIV has lung cancer, the Vatican says. He is eating and walking after surgery
Doctors found cancer during Pope Leo’s lung operation and removed a portion of the lung, the Vatican said, according to CBS News and NBC News. NPR, Reuters, the Guardian, ABC News, the New York Times and PBS NewsHour also reported it. The Vatican said his recovery is proceeding as expected, NBC reported, and PBS and AP reported that he is eating and recovering. A Vatican update relayed in a breaking-news feed said he has begun walking and respiratory exercises and that his post-operative tests are normal. AP reported that a planned Latin America trip is now in question. Trump wished him a speedy recovery, Fox News reported. We saw no stage of the cancer and no prognosis.
The pope leads some 1.4 billion Catholics, and his health shapes the Church’s calendar and its plans for travel. The Vatican’s early account is reassuring on recovery but silent on the cancer’s extent, which is what decides further treatment.
Nothing to do. CBS carried a doctor noting that you do not have to be a smoker to get lung cancer, a reminder that screening is worth asking your own doctor about.
Expect carefully worded bulletins. The facts that matter next are the stage, whether more treatment is planned and the fate of the Latin America trip. Until the Vatican says more, anything about prognosis is speculation.
