Shooting at Oregon elementary school kills three children and a teacher
A shooting took place at Silver Rail Elementary School in Oregon on Thursday, October 15. The New York Times, The Guardian, NBC News and the Associated Press reported that three children and a teacher were killed. NBC News reported, citing sources, that the suspect was a 16-year-old whose mother bought the gun. The AP reported police said the teen was a former student. A motive has not been reported and the suspect’s death is not detailed in the reports reviewed.
Families, students and staff at the school lose their daily routine and face weeks of counseling and funerals. Parents in other districts hear the story and press schools about security and about storing guns at home.
If you have children in school, ask the principal what the lockdown plan is and how visitors are screened. If you own a gun, check that it is locked and the key is out of reach of teenagers.
The gun came from a parent’s purchase; the safe-storage question is now the local story. Everything about motive remains unconfirmed.
