Man shot dead in a dispute on a Midtown Manhattan subway platform; gunman flees
A man thought to be in his 30s was shot dead Saturday, Oct. 17, on the northbound E platform at the 53rd Street–Seventh Avenue station, NBC News, ABC7 New York and Gothamist reported. The NYPD said the shooting, about 12:21 p.m., followed a dispute between two men that moved onto a train and back. He was shot once in the chest and died at Bellevue Hospital. Police said the attack was not random and released images of a person of interest in red clothing, a black vest and a black mask, Fox 5 New York reported. No arrest was announced.
A midday shooting near Times Square cuts against the city’s message that subway crime is falling, and it will shape the debate over policing on trains. That police call it targeted rather than random matters for how riders weigh the risk.
If you ride the D or E lines, service was disrupted Saturday during the investigation. Police are asking anyone who recognizes the person in the images to come forward.
Police stress that the attack grew out of a dispute and was not random, which they say means riders at large were not targeted.
Coverage by Gothamist and Fox 5 New York stressed that the shooting happened at midday near Times Square and disrupted D and E service, which feeds riders’ safety worries however it began.
Confirmed: time, place, one dead, suspect at large. Not confirmed: the victim’s name or whether the two men knew each other. Watch for an arrest.
