Truck drives through a youth soccer game in Wichita, killing a 6-year-old boy and a man

A truck drove through a youth soccer game at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita on Saturday, Oct. 17, police said. A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson and not related, were killed, KWCH and CBS News reported. Eleven people were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, CBS News and ABC7 Chicago reported. The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, is in custody and cooperating, police said. Two juveniles were in the vehicle. Police said it is unclear whether the crash was intentional.

Whether this was an accident, a medical emergency or a deliberate act decides everything that follows, from charges to how sports complexes are designed. Police have kept that question open, and no charges have been filed.

Youth sports fields often sit beside parking lots and access roads with little separation. Parents may start asking leagues and cities about barriers between cars and play areas.

Police and local officials have stressed caution, saying the cause is not yet known and the driver is cooperating with investigators.

Coverage by CBS News and Fox News centered on the question police left open: why the truck reached the field at all. Police have not said, and no charges have been filed.

Confirmed: two dead, 11 hospitalized, driver in custody. Not confirmed: why the truck left the road. Watch for charges and any word on the two juveniles in the vehicle.
