Massachusetts GOP lieutenant governor nominee Shawn Oliver suspends campaign after OUI arrest
The Boston Globe, CBS Boston and WPRI reported that Shawn Oliver, Republican nominee for Massachusetts lieutenant governor, suspended his campaign Oct. 18. Police said his vehicle struck five parked vehicles and flipped late Saturday on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford. He was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation, a marked lanes violation and speeding. Gubernatorial nominee Mike Minogue said he would ask for Oliver's resignation if both were elected. WPRI said Oliver was expected to be arraigned Monday. His name stays on the ballot.
In Massachusetts, governor and lieutenant governor run as a ticket, so a damaged running mate hurts the top of the ballot. With early voting underway, the party cannot replace his name.
If you vote in Massachusetts, a vote for Minogue is also a vote for Oliver on the ballot, even though he has suspended. Mail ballots already cast cannot be changed.
State Republican leaders said they support his decision and that it lets the campaign refocus.
Democrats and some commentators say the episode weakens an already uphill GOP ticket.
Confirmed: the crash, charges and suspension. Pending: the court case. Watch Monday's arraignment in New Bedford District Court.
