Pickup kills a 6-year-old and a man at a Wichita youth soccer game; driver released
CNN and The Washington Post reported that a pickup drove onto a youth soccer field at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex around 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17. Fox News reported police identified the dead as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both of McPherson. ABC News said the driver is a 34-year-old Garden City woman with two of her children in the truck. Police released her without charges pending toxicology tests and an inspection of the truck, The New York Times and CNN reported. TMZ reported that police interviewed more than 30 witnesses. Ten others were hospitalized, according to CNN.
Releasing a driver after two deaths is unusual, and it signals that police do not yet have evidence of a crime, such as impairment or intent. The toxicology and mechanical results will decide whether this is treated as an accident, a medical event or a criminal case.
If your children play at open sports complexes, this raises the question of barriers between parking areas and fields. It is worth asking your league or park district how vehicles are kept away from the fields during games, and whether drop-off lanes sit next to play areas. Families from McPherson, about an hour north of Wichita, were among those affected.
Police, as reported by CNN and The New York Times, are treating the cause as unknown until toxicology results and a mechanical inspection of the truck come back. On that view, releasing the driver without charges is a normal step while evidence is gathered, not a judgment that no one is responsible.
For the witnesses NBC News interviewed, the focus is the human toll: they said they remain haunted by what they saw at a children's game. Their accounts, and ABC News's report that the driver's own children were in the truck and on a nearby field, keep attention on how a vehicle reached a field during play.
Confirmed: two deaths, 10 hospitalized, the driver released pending tests. Not confirmed: the cause. Watch for the toxicology report, the truck inspection and whether the Sedgwick County district attorney files charges.
