Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas and six others indicted in a federal marijuana racketeering case

PBS NewsHour reported that Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel announced federal charges against Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas on Thursday, Oct. 22. CNBC reported that Lucas, a Trump critic, was charged in a marijuana racketeering case. NBC News reported that the Justice Department described the case as public corruption. The Hill reported that Lucas was indicted. The Virginia Mercury reported that six other defendants were indicted with her, including family members, and that prosecutors say the marijuana enterprise ran from about 2019 through 2026. The Virginia Mercury reported that Lucas said she will not be intimidated. Charges are allegations.

A racketeering conspiracy charge lets prosecutors treat a group's activity over several years as one criminal enterprise, which can raise the potential penalties. Lucas is a senior member of the Virginia Senate, so the case affects state politics as well as the people named. The announcement came less than two weeks before the Nov. 3 election.

If you live in Virginia, the case may shape how people talk about the state's marijuana licensing rules and about the Senate, where Lucas is a senior member. A federal indictment is a charge, not a verdict, and the defendants are presumed innocent until a court decides otherwise.

Federal prosecutors say the indictment describes a criminal marijuana enterprise and a public corruption scheme, as PBS NewsHour and NBC News reported. On this view the charges rest on conduct over several years and are not tied to the election.

Lucas has said she will not be intimidated, the Virginia Mercury reported. CNBC's description of her as a Trump critic points to the view held by some of her supporters that the timing deserves scrutiny, though the reports cited no evidence of political motive.

Confirmed: a federal indictment against Lucas and six others was announced on Oct. 22. Not confirmed: any of the allegations, which a court has not tested. Watch for an arraignment, a plea, and any decision by Virginia Senate leaders on her committee roles.
