Former Knysna mayor and co-accused due in court over alleged kickbacks

EWN reported on 5 October that former Knysna mayor Matika and a co-accused were due in court over corruption allegations. The charges say he solicited kickbacks of hundreds of thousands of rands from a businessman to protect a municipal security services contract. DailyDrop has not seen a second outlet or the outcome of the hearing.

Municipal tenders are a recurring source of corruption cases, and the story arrives four weeks before local elections.

Corruption in contracts takes money from services, including water and refuse collection.

Unconfirmed beyond one outlet. Charges are allegations until a court rules.
