Rand little changed near R16.66 on Monday as Wall Street rises and oil slips
The rand held near R16.66 on Monday evening (Rio Times), after about R16.6825 early on Monday (Reuters via Engineering News); another roundup had R16.74. The All Share traded near 108,200-108,300 with no official close. On Wall Street the S&P 500 closed at 7,773.95 (+0.66%), WTI at US$89.43 (−1.84%) and gold at US$4,156.8 (−0.13%).
The rand drives import costs, including fuel. Moves on Wall Street and oil swings affect the rand through risk appetite and commodity prices.
A steadier rand and softer oil limit the risk of an even bigger fuel rise in November, but they do not change Wednesday's price.
Falling oil and a rising S&P 500 suggest markets are looking past the Hormuz standoff.
Rising global bond yields and a stronger dollar are a persistent headwind for emerging-market currencies.
