Hundreds gather at Durban refugee centre after Home Affairs tells offices to take asylum applications

Briefly reported that hundreds of asylum seekers gathered at the Durban Refugee Reception Centre and blocked Che Guevara Road after a Home Affairs directive told reception offices to receive anyone who appears in person and says they want to apply. The directive followed a recent Constitutional Court ruling that struck down several provisions of the Refugees Act, including one that required applicants without documents to show good cause. Residents voiced concern. DailyDrop has seen no second report in the window.

The ruling widens access to asylum applications, and local tension over migration is already high in several cities.

Expect queues and road closures near the Durban office. Government says the ruling does not grant refugee status automatically.

Single report. Watch police presence and any official statement on how the directive will be managed.
