DIRCO tells MPs it needs R300 million a year to fix crumbling foreign mission buildings

DIRCO told MPs it needs more than R300 million a year to maintain foreign mission buildings (EWN, 6 Oct). At least 30% are in poor condition and 28% are good. The portfolio passed from Public Works in 1999 without budget or staff; seven people manage it across 114 missions. A parliamentary reply reported on 28 September put renovation needs at over R830 million, and the portfolio is worth about R5 billion. No funding increase has been approved.

Embassies host diplomats and run consular services for South Africans abroad. Neglect raises long-term costs, and the shortfall comes as foreign-policy tensions with Washington rise.

Not a direct household effect, but a signal of pressure on the foreign-affairs budget and on services for South Africans abroad.

The DA says the money should be reprioritised toward maintenance and economic diplomacy.

DIRCO says the gap is structural, tracing it to the 1999 handover without funds.
