Rand weakens to about R16.70 as fuel prices rise; Wall Street slips and gold falls 1.1%

The rand traded at 16.5850 early and 16.7025 later on Wednesday (Reuters via CNBC Africa), weaker on a firmer dollar and higher oil. No closing figure was confirmed. US close: S&P 500 7,801.77 (−0.22%), WTI US$88.28 (−1.30%), gold US$4,140.7 (−1.11%). Brent was about US$102.60 on 5 October (Trading Economics).

The rand's level determines how much of the oil price shows up at the pump, and gold is a key export.

A weaker rand keeps pressure on fuel and imported goods, while a falling gold price weighs on mining shares.

Lower WTI suggests some supply relief.

Brent above US$100 and a rand near R16.70 still point to another November rise.

Intraday numbers move too much to trust. Wait for the weekly close and the mid-month fuel data.
