South African mechanic held hostage in Mozambique since September is freed unharmed
DIRCO confirmed that a 30-year-old Limpopo mechanic held hostage in Mozambique since September was released unharmed on 4 October and left the country on 7 October (TimesLIVE, EWN). He was one of three civilians taken from a hunting lodge in an attack on Marangira town, Niassa Province, by rebels believed to be linked to an Islamic State affiliate. DIRCO credited the High Commission in Maputo.
It ends a month-long ordeal and shows consular work in a conflict zone where South Africans work in hunting and mining camps.
South Africans working in northern Mozambique should register with the High Commission and follow travel advice.
A rare good-news security story. Details of the negotiation are not public, and DailyDrop will not speculate.
