AA asks Treasury to cut the general fuel levy by R3 a litre and scrap the RAF levy
The AA asked Treasury to cut the general fuel levy by R3 a litre and to scrap the RAF levy after petrol passed R30 (BusinessTech, Daily Investor, 8 Oct). Treasury cut the levy in April and phased the relief out from June. The MTBPS is on 21 October. No government reply has been reported.
Taxes and levies are about a fifth of the pump price, and this is the only lever the government controls.
If Treasury agrees, the saving would be R3 a litre, but that is unlikely before the budget statement.
The AA says motorists are under unsustainable pressure.
Treasury says revenue is needed and relief is costly; the April cut cost R17.2 billion.
Expect the question to come up at the 21 October budget statement. DailyDrop would not bet on a repeat cut.
