Rand on course for its first weekly gain in five weeks as gold jumps 1.4%
The rand traded at 16.5275 on Friday morning (Reuters via CNBC Africa and Business Recorder), up about 0.4% on the day and 0.7% on the week, ending a four-week losing run. Trading Economics had 16.50 (provisional). US close: S&P 500 7,811.54 (+0.59%), WTI US$91.85 (+0.39%), gold US$4,216.3 (+1.43%). The Reserve Bank hiked to 7.25% last month and markets expect two more hikes.
A firmer rand is the quickest way to cut the fuel price outlook, and rate expectations affect bond and home-loan costs.
A stronger rand helps fuel and imported goods. Higher interest rates mean bond repayments stay high for longer.
Gold and a softer dollar are giving the rand some room.
One good week does not undo four bad ones, and Hormuz and rate-hike risks remain.
