South African jurist Navi Pillay wins the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay on 9 October "for her efforts to promote peace and international law" (Al Jazeera, Nobel Committee, CNN, EWN, eNCA). She is a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the first woman of colour on South Africa's High Court, and a former judge and president of the Rwanda tribunal. The committee chair, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, said it could not reach her before the announcement. The ceremony will be on 10 December.
It is the first Nobel Peace Prize for a South African since 1993 and it recognises accountability for war crimes at a time of conflict in several regions.
A rare moment of international recognition for South Africa, coming in a week dominated by unrest and fuel prices.
Supporters say the prize honours a lifetime of work on the rule of law and victims of atrocity crimes.
Critics of international justice institutions say such prizes reward process over results, and that enforcement remains weak.
The prize also sharpens the focus on international criminal law while South Africa is debating its own role at the ICC and ICJ. Watch how the government and the opposition respond, and whether Pillay speaks publicly this weekend.
