Sundowns beat Pirates 2-0 to win the MTN8 and end four years of Pirates dominance
Sundowns beat Pirates 2-0 in the MTN8 final in Durban on 10 October (The Herald, SuperSport, Africa Soccer, SNL24, MDNtv, EB News Daily). Mokoena scored in the 11th or 12th minute and Rayners scored a late penalty. Ronwen Williams saved a 63rd-minute penalty from Gamphani Lungu. It ended Pirates' four-year run, and is Sundowns' first MTN8 title since 2021 and Cardoso's first domestic trophy there. The prize is R10 million.
It is the first big trophy of the season and a statement in the rivalry between the two clubs.
Supporters of both clubs now turn to the league fixtures.
A good-news weekend result after a hard week in Durban. Whether it turns into a league title challenge is another matter.
