Madlanga Commission seeks a statement from Sibiya's associate as his bail case returns to court
The Madlanga Commission wants a statement from Serge Cabonge, whom eNCA calls an associate of Shadrack Sibiya. SABC News and The Citizen reported that it will question Cabonge over allegations in recordings linked to Sibiya. SABC News reported that the commission applied for an in-camera hearing for a Dr Sifolo, and The Citizen reported that it seeks closed-door testimony from the intelligence coordinator. Sibiya, who resigned from SAPS, was back at the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for the continuation of his bail hearing (IOL, SABC News). DailyDrop has not seen the bail ruling or any hearing dates.
The commission is testing claims about crime and interference in policing and the justice system. Evidence from people close to a senior officer could shape what it finds.
Nothing changes for you today, but the findings may affect how policing is run and who is held to account.
Supporters of the inquiry say closed-door hearings protect witnesses and sensitive intelligence.
Critics say too much secrecy weakens public trust in an inquiry meant to restore it.
Watch for a date for Cabonge and for the bail ruling. A resignation did not end the criminal case.
