Hot US inflation and AI-debt worries hit chip stocks, and the sell-off spills into Asia

Reuters reported that US consumer prices accelerated in September on costlier petrol, with core inflation firmer, and Bloomberg called it the fastest increase in inflation since April. Bloomberg said stocks and bonds fell together as traders raised bets on Federal Reserve rate hikes. The FT reported that Nvidia, Oracle and CoreWeave fell as fervour around technology cooled. Bloomberg reported that Bank of America slid on a $1.21 billion fine and that the S&P 500 ended its longest spell of calm since 2020. Reuters reported in an exclusive that Fed official Daly said hikes are likely needed but not urgently. Overnight, Reuters reported an Asian sell-off and FinancialJuice said Taiwan stocks fell more than 2%. DailyDrop could not confirm closing index levels from two outlets.

Interest rates set in Washington reach South Africa through the rand, bond yields and the mood of foreign investors, who own a meaningful share of JSE shares and government bonds.

A weaker rand would feed into petrol and imported goods. If you hold offshore or tech-heavy funds, expect a dip in your next statement.

Some Fed officials say there is no urgency, and one said trading had calmed after the first reaction (Reuters, FinancialJuice).

Another Fed official called the data discouraging and flagged services inflation, FinancialJuice reported, citing Yahoo.

One hot month is not a trend, but markets that had grown calm have been reminded that rates can still rise. Watch the next Fed speakers, the Thursday opens in Europe, and whether the rand holds.
