UK Maritime Trade Operations announced that a tanker was hit by multiple projectiles about 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash-Shamal in Qatar, at around 19:00 GMT on October 7, with casualties (Al Jazeera, BBC, The Guardian, Infobae). The attacker and the vessel’s flag were not announced. It is the first attack on a tanker deep in the Gulf in about a month. EFE reported that at least eight tankers have been attacked over several days, most of them on the Omani side, and Bloomberg, via Perfil, relayed that Iran had stepped up the attacks. Brent rose above
Attacks moving away from the strait into the deep Gulf means the danger is no longer confined to the narrow passage, and it raises insurance and shipping costs for vessels heading to ports in the UAE and Qatar.
Some shipments of imported goods may be delayed and shipping costs may rise. No change has been announced in the operation of UAE airports and ports; watch for airline updates.
One view: the escalation in attacks shows that Iran is applying pressure in the negotiations, which have stalled.
The other view: there is no public evidence of the attacker’s identity, and it could be other parties.
What we are waiting for: the body to identify the party and the vessel and the condition of the injured, and a statement on the effect on tanker transit. We do not build on the figure “eight” because it comes from a single source.

Tanker hit by multiple projectiles off Qatar with casualties, and Brent returns above $100
UK Maritime Trade Operations announced the incident on Wednesday evening, the first attack on a tanker deep in the Gulf in about a month. Neither the attacker nor the vessel’s nationality has been identified.
UK Maritime Trade Operations said a tanker was hit by multiple projectiles about 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash-Shamal in Qatar, at around 19:00 GMT on Wednesday, October 7, with casualties recorded, according to Al Jazeera, the BBC, The Guardian and Infobae. The attacker and the tanker’s flag were not identified. Reports described the incident as the first attack on a tanker deep in the Gulf in about a month.
Spain’s EFE agency reported that at least eight tankers have been attacked in recent days, most of them on the Omani side of the strait, and Bloomberg, via Perfil, relayed that Iran had stepped up its attacks on tankers as crude flows recovered. Brent jumped above $100 to about $101.5 in early trading. In DailyDrop’s reading, the attack’s proximity to Qatari waters near the UAE raises sensitivity for shipping and insurance, but we do not attribute the attack to anyone without confirmation.
