Robert Hall and Michael Woodford win the economics Nobel
The Nobel committee announced on Monday that Americans Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford share the 2026 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, per Reuters, AP, CBC, The Globe and Mail, Al Jazeera and Global News. Reuters and The Globe and Mail said the prize recognizes work on stabilizing economies; Global News put it as work on how to manage shocks. We did not see the committee's full citation.
Stabilization, meaning how governments and central banks respond to booms, recessions and inflation, is the problem policymakers face every time a shock hits.
It changes nothing in your budget. The field the prize honours is the one the Bank of Canada works in when it sets interest rates.
Prizes look backward; the useful question is which of these ideas is being tested now, with inflation and rising yields back in the news.
