Federal agents search Rep. Ilhan Omar's home in a criminal investigation

AP reported on Monday, citing sources, that federal agents had searched the home of Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar as part of a criminal investigation. CNN described a search of her home in the Washington area; the National Post said Homeland Security agents carried it out; Reuters, citing Fox News, called it an immigration raid. CBC reported that Democrats condemned the search as "deeply disturbing" ahead of the midterm elections, and Fox News quoted Ms. Omar calling it "political intimidation." A French-language report said the probe concerns how she obtained U.S. citizenship, but we saw that only in one family of reports and treat it as unconfirmed. We did not see charges or a warrant.

A search of a sitting member of Congress, weeks before midterm elections, is politically charged whatever its legal basis.

No direct effect in Canada. It is part of the U.S. election picture that shapes trade and border policy.

Prosecutors say no one is above the law, and a search warrant has to be approved by a judge.

Democrats say the timing and the target point to political intimidation.

The facts that matter are not yet public: the legal basis, what was seized and whether charges follow. Until they are, treat each side's claim as a claim.
