Navi Pillay, South African human rights lawyer, wins the Nobel Peace Prize

Navi Pillay, 85, a South African human rights lawyer and former UN human rights chief, won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, announced in Oslo by committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes (NPR, PBS, Khaleej Times, ARY News). The committee cited her efforts to promote peace, human rights and international law. There were 287 nominees. A UN commission she led in 2025 found that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, according to the New York Times; Israel denounced the finding. She follows María Corina Machado.

The prize signals what the committee values at a time of wars in Ukraine and the Middle East: international law and human rights bodies.

There is no direct effect, but the choice will be part of the debate about the UN and international courts.

Supporters say the prize recognises decades of work to hold governments to international law.

Critics, including Israel and President Trump, dispute the choice and her Gaza findings.

A prize for a human rights lawyer is a message about law, and it will be used in political arguments. Treat the controversy and the facts of her career as separate things.
