Trump says Russia will supply US with 300,000 tons of diesel as Washington eases sanctions; Zelenskyy calls it a "gift to Putin"

A US licence allows Russian diesel into the country until April 2027. Ukraine's president condemned the move, and delivery has not been confirmed.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday, after a call with Vladimir Putin, that Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, according to ITV News, The National, NPR member station reports, Kurs and Liga.net. He said a further 500,000 tons would follow in November, then 1 million tons, and later 3 million. Some of the volumes are conditional, and the reports say implementation has not been confirmed. The US Treasury's sanctions office issued a general licence allowing Russian-origin diesel to be sold, delivered and imported into the US until April 2027, according to the same reports.

Trump framed it as a way to cut fuel prices before the US midterm elections. Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the move, calling it a "gift to Putin" and "a weak decision by strong partners", according to ITV News and Kurs. The announcement came as US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were meeting Ukrainian officials about ending the war. The reports say it casts doubt on new US sanctions on Russian oil. WTI closed at US$91.85, up 0.39%.

Navi Pillay, South African human rights lawyer, wins the Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced in Oslo on Friday that the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize goes to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, 85, a South African human rights lawyer and former UN human rights chief, according to NPR member stations, PBS, Khaleej Times, ARY News and Joemygod. Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes said she was honoured for efforts to promote peace and international law. There were 287 nominees.

The committee said the ability to resolve conflicts without force depends on the international rule of law. The New York Times, quoted in coverage, noted that a UN commission Pillay led on Gaza in 2025 concluded that Israel committed genocide, a finding Israel rejects. She succeeds the 2025 laureate, María Corina Machado. Trump posted on Truth Social criticising the committee and the laureate on the same day.

Oil eases early on Trump's talk of productive Iran talks, but ends higher as tanker attacks continue

Brent traded around US$102.83 and WTI around US$90.33 on Friday after the previous day's jump, easing after reports that President Trump said productive talks were under way with Iran, according to Oilprice.com. The same outlet reported that Iran struck a tanker in the Gulf of Oman, where Saudi Arabia carries out ship-to-ship transfers.

WTI closed at US$91.85, up 0.39%, according to market data. Iran has said previously that no negotiations were taking place, and DailyDrop has found no confirmation from Tehran of talks. These details come from one outlet, so they are attributed. The pattern is the same: oil falls on talk of diplomacy and rises on each new attack.

Public sector unions have called national strike days for 14 and 21 October, and say no talks are under way

Unions have planned a one-day national strike with pickets on Wednesday 14 October and a second on Wednesday 21 October, according to the Irish Times, RTÉ, Fórsa and TheJournal. Fórsa says there are currently no talks taking place. A work-to-rule by more than 100,000 public sector workers began in September, TheJournal reported. Fórsa's general secretary says unions want cost-of-living issues addressed at the outset, while the Government calls that a precondition.

The Irish Times reported that disruption to schools and health services is likely, and that the civil service work-to-rule could disrupt Ireland's EU presidency. TheJournal reported that the Public Expenditure Minister accused unions of being unwilling to negotiate as teachers prepared for an all-out strike. DailyDrop earlier described the strike dates as likely. They are now confirmed as planned national days by the union itself.
