Trump says Russia will supply 4.8 million tonnes of diesel as the US suspends sanctions on Russian fuel

The announcement followed a call with Vladimir Putin. The Treasury Department paused the sanctions on Russian diesel until April 2027.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday 9 October, US time, after a phone call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, that Russia would supply about 4.8 million tonnes of diesel, according to MercoPress, Fox11 and TRT World. He wrote on Truth Social that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons to the American and global marketplace. Reports said a further 500,000 tonnes would follow in November and 1 million tonnes after that, with 3 million more depending on the state of Russian refineries. The Treasury Department temporarily suspended sanctions on Russian diesel until April 2027, the reports said.

The White House did not immediately say who would pay, when the fuel would arrive, or whether November cargoes would arrive before the 3 November US elections. Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev praised the deal, and a separate Russian government confirmation was not available at first. MercoPress and Fox11 framed it as a major shift after years of pressure on Moscow over Ukraine. For Malaysia, diesel is a traded commodity priced off global benchmarks, so more Russian supply could ease prices, but DailyDrop has seen no estimate of the effect.

Analyst calls Budget 2027 a bid to win votes before GE16, as ministers welcome the focus on living costs

Political analyst James Chin said Budget 2027 appears aimed at winning public support before the next general election, with targeted help for lower-income groups, youths and civil servants, Sinar Daily reported through Newswav. He pointed to a higher RM3.1 billion allocation for the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, or Jakim, and asked whether it was meant to appeal to Muslim voters. Chin said actual spending could reach RM480 billion to RM500 billion by the end of 2027.

Malay Mail reported that ministers gave positive responses, welcoming the focus on living costs, wages and public services. The Star’s Saturday front page called it a record RM510 billion budget. The figure is disputed in detail: Bernama and Sinar Daily cite RM459.8 billion for the federal budget, up 3.6% from the revised 2026 allocation. DailyDrop did not find a statement from the opposition in the reports it saw, and does not describe one.

Houthi strike on Riyadh airport kills 12 and injures more than 300, Saudi authorities say

A Houthi strike hit Riyadh’s airport on Saturday 10 October, Saudi time, and Saudi authorities put the toll at 12 dead and more than 300 injured, according to reports in the Financial Times, The New York Times and the Mirror. The Straits Times reported a loud blast at the airport and more airline cancellations. DailyDrop could not reach the toll through its own searches, which found only earlier strikes: Saudi authorities said three people were killed in attacks on Riyadh and Abha airports on 7 and 8 October, including a Saudia captain, and the Houthis claimed them.

The Saudi-led coalition said it had destroyed three launch platforms. Lufthansa Group said its airlines would suspend flights to Riyadh through 16 October, and Cirium counted 169 of 378 scheduled departures from King Khalid International Airport as cancelled or marked no-fly earlier in the week. The Guardian reported that Yemen’s government and allied forces had recaptured the Bab al-Mandab strait from the Houthis. The Houthis’ position on shipping through the strait was not confirmed by DailyDrop.

Russian attack on a Ukrainian city kills 12 a day after Trump eases diesel sanctions on Moscow

A Russian attack on a Ukrainian city killed 12 people the day after Trump eased sanctions on Russian diesel, The Straits Times reported, with Reuters and AP also covering the strike. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram that Russia had “thanked” the United States for the easing by dropping guided bombs on homes in Zaporizhzhia.

The New York Times reported the diesel deal with Putin on the same day. DailyDrop has not seen a Russian response, and the timing of the strike relative to the call is as reported by those outlets. For Malaysian readers the connection is oil and fuel prices, and the broader question of whether sanctions pressure on Russia is easing while the war continues.
