Man, 58, to face two murder charges after two people die in Christchurch's Phillipstown

Police were called to an address on Olliviers Road shortly after midnight on Saturday. Two people died at the scene and two others are in hospital with serious injuries.

A 58-year-old man is due in Christchurch District Court on Monday charged with two counts of murder, one of attempted murder and one of wounding with intent, according to 1News and New Zealand Police. Officers were called to the Olliviers Road address in Phillipstown shortly after midnight on Saturday 10 October. Two people died at the scene and two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said earlier that two people were in custody assisting with inquiries. They believe this was an isolated incident and are not looking for anyone else. Residents should expect more police presence while scene examinations continue. Anyone with information or CCTV footage is asked to call 105 and quote file number 261010/6589. Police have not named the dead. A charge is not a finding of guilt.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes off southern Panama, followed by a second quake and aftershocks

A strong earthquake struck near the southern coast of Panama on Friday 9 October at a depth of about 10 km, according to the US Geological Survey, as reported by Reuters via The Star, the Associated Press, Khaleej Times and the Jamaica Observer. The USGS first put the magnitude at 8.0, then revised it to 7.6 and later to 7.7. AP described a second quake of magnitude 6.6 and a series of aftershocks. A tsunami warning was reported, and Tocumen International Airport temporarily suspended operations.

Reports on damage differ. AP described collapsing buildings near the epicentre, while Khaleej Times reported no immediate reports of damage. DailyDrop has not found a casualty figure it can confirm from two outlets, and no New Zealand impact was reported in the sources it saw.

Trump says Russia will supply diesel to the US and the world and eases sanctions to let it happen

President Donald Trump said on Friday 9 October, after a phone call with Vladimir Putin, that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, then 500,000 tons in November and a million after that, according to MercoPress, St. Louis Public Radio (NPR), The National and ORF. He added a further three million tons depending on the state of Russian refineries. The US Treasury issued a temporary licence for Russian-origin diesel, reported to run until April 2027, a partial easing of sanctions.

The White House did not say who would pay for the fuel or when it would arrive. Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called it "a weak decision by strong partners", and some US lawmakers criticised it. The move was framed as easing prices before the November midterm elections. For New Zealand, which imports all its refined fuel, the effect would depend on how much extra diesel reaches Asian markets.

Ronaldo faces a provisional suspension after walking out of Portugal's camp

Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal's camp in Copenhagen before the match against Denmark after a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his role, according to Football Transfers, ARY News, EWN and Arise. Reports citing The Mirror said Portuguese Football Federation rules automatically triggered a provisional suspension. The federation's disciplinary council will decide the length, which could run from one to six months, and a ban of more than a month would rule him out of the next two Nations League matches, against Denmark and Wales.

Ronaldo issued a lengthy statement accepting responsibility for leaving and saying he should be punished by the federation, and made clear he is not retiring from international football. The federation said only that he had left and its preparations continued with 24 players. DailyDrop has seen no final ruling.

Houthi strike on Riyadh's airport kills 12 and injures more than 300, Saudi authorities say

A Houthi missile attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday 10 October killed 12 people and injured more than 300, Saudi authorities said, as reported by the Financial Times, The New York Times and the Mirror. Earlier Houthi strikes on Thursday had killed three and injured more than 30 after two Saudi airports were targeted, Saudi civil aviation authorities said, as reported by Gulf News, Khaleej Times and the Associated Press via ABC News.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for the earlier attack, saying a missile caused damage but giving no evidence. More than 275 flights were cancelled at the airport on Thursday, and Lufthansa Group suspended Riyadh flights through 16 October. For New Zealanders the effect is mainly on oil prices and on travel that routes through the Gulf.
