Indians in the line of fire: five rescued from a tanker hit in Hormuz, and an Indian-run drug plant in Ukraine destroyed

The Indian embassy in Oman said on X that it coordinated, with Omani authorities, the rescue of five Indian citizens from the Kuwait-flagged tanker MT Kazimah III after it was hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz; all five were taken ashore safely. The UKMTO reported a small fire and a blackout, with no casualties. Gulf News and Deccan Chronicle date the embassy's post to Friday; other outlets say Saturday. Indian officials say over 4,500 Indian seafarers serve on ships in the region. On 23 September an attack on the MV Cape Dao near the strait killed one Indian. Separately, a Russian drone strike on Ukraine's Sumy region largely destroyed a plant of the Kusum Group, run by Indian national Rajeev Gupta; one person died and several were hurt, with early loss estimates of Rs 400 crore. President Zelensky condemned the strikes. Russia's embassy had denied attacking Kusum's Kyiv warehouse in April 2025.

Two wars are now touching Indian lives directly. Seafarers and Indian-owned firms are exposed in places India has little power to protect them, and every incident raises insurance costs and pressure on the government to speak.

If a family member works on ships, the Directorate General of Shipping and Indian missions run helplines; register details with the recruiting agency. For those who work with Ukrainian or Gulf firms, check your employer's evacuation plan.

India has done what it can: the embassy acted quickly and no Indian was hurt in this incident. Naming a culprit without proof would only worsen things.

Reciprocal silence is a policy choice. When Indian citizens and companies are hit, New Delhi tends to say little about who did it, which leaves them to bear the risk.

Look for two things: whether the MEA names the attacker in either case, and whether manning agencies get fresh advisories on Gulf sailings. The first tells you about diplomacy; the second tells you who actually bears the risk.
