India finish fourth at the Asian Games with 85 medals, 21 of them gold, and book a hockey ticket to Los Angeles

India finished fourth at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, the same rank as at Hangzhou but well below the 106 medals there. China led with 169 golds among 341 medals, followed by Japan and Korea. The men's hockey team beat Malaysia 5–1 in the final to retain the title and qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The women beat China 1–0 for their first gold since 1982, and the women's cricket team beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs. Shooter Neeru Dhanda won two golds and a silver and carried the flag at the closing ceremony at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. Doha will host in 2030.

The medal count is lower but the quality at the top is higher: direct Olympic qualification in men's hockey is worth more than a few extra bronzes. The drop from 106 also reflects a smaller event programme and fewer sports where India usually collects medals.

If you follow hockey, the next date to mark is the 2028 Games. For young athletes, the shooting and hockey results strengthen the case for funding those sports.

Read 85 medals as a different Games, not a worse one. The number to hold the Sports Ministry to is Olympic qualification, and hockey has delivered it.
