Medicine Nobel goes to the three scientists who made brain cells respond to light

The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute announced the 2026 prize in Physiology or Medicine on Monday: one-third each to Karl Deisseroth (Stanford), Peter Hegemann (Humboldt University, Berlin) and Georg Nagel (University of Würzburg), for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Hegemann and Nagel identified channelrhodopsin in a green alga. Deisseroth showed that the protein could control nerve cells in living mice. The announcement was made by Thomas Perlmann and opens the 2026 Nobel season.

Optogenetics changed neuroscience from watching the brain to switching parts of it on and off. It lets researchers test whether a given group of neurons causes a behaviour, rather than merely accompanies it. It is also moving into clinical trials, for example for restoring partial vision.

No treatment changes tomorrow. Over the next decade, expect it to show up in research on depression, epilepsy and blindness. Indian institutions such as NCBS and IISc already use the method.

The prize rewards a chain: a curiosity about algae, a gene, and a clever delivery method. The lesson for science funding is how long the first link sat without an obvious use.
